Commodore's Letter

Greetings from the Little Red Boathouse on the Hudson!

Things are beginning to bloom around New York and that means ICC’s summer season has come! As you know, a big part of our summer is Sunday Open House, which serves about 550 people each year. This beloved program is a great opportunity for our neighbors to enjoy the River and is the keystone of our public programs.

This year, since our active membership has expanded so much, we are planning two pilot programs. One pilot will offer paddling trips to fellow nonprofits in Inwood, Washington Heights and the Bronx. The other will offer interested (and qualified) guests the opportunity to take a longer trip with members. We are confident that one or both will be popular enough to become permanent programs.

For the past 112 years, ICC has been providing a place for our neighbors to paddle, learn water safety and stewardship, and form life-long friendships. We are proud of our heritage as a training ground for local youth to advance in competition – some of them to the Olympics! And we plan to be right here for the next century introducing New Yorkers to the water around them.

You can help us get more people on the water. Please join us on Saturday, June 7, 2014, for Cocktails on the Hudson – an event to raise money for our public programs.

I hope to see you on the water soon,

Janet Handy
